Special features such as through-the-door dispensers, higher-end ice machines, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We asked experts like Ladina Schopf, an interior designer architect, founder, and co-founder of LS Projects, for tips on how to select the best one. They evaluated storage capacity, layout and energy efficiency, among other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that the GE Profile series is aimed at people who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchens. This refrigerator has it all from a Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door to a sophisticated dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs an extra amount, I'd like to see higher quality.

Apart from that minor flaw however, this refrigerator is a fantastic choice. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a fair amount of frozen food when compared to similar models.

The fridge is equipped with 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is standard for a French-door fridge at this price. It also has a decent-sized icemaker packed into the left-hand door, although it's not the biggest I've seen.

You can adjust the shelves in both compartments for an individual storage solution. The GE PYE22PYNFS's design for the interior is attractive, too. The LED lighting adds an attractive accent. The bins for storage inside have a third shelf which can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers include temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to open and shut, but I found the textured plastic coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator has all the features you would expect from a refrigerator in this price range. This includes Wi-Fi as well as app support, and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and it has many options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when a door is left open, when your fridge or freezer needs to be defrosted and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill which is a feature that is available in a few GE refrigerators that allows users to select how many cups they want to disperse. The fridge displays a countdown to display how much water is left, but it's not as effective as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Designed to look like a seamless part of your kitchen Bosch's French door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also features a veggie compartment that keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and dual compressors to preserve food. The Ice maker is among the most efficient we've ever tested and produces a pyramid-shaped ice with a low water usage. This refrigerator is a great option for households with a single member or kitchenettes looking for a sleek design and top of the line food preservation.

The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for several reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never fluctuated by more than a fraction, this is crucial to prevent freezing burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the initial temperature within an hour, and remained at the temperature throughout our tests.

Bosch is known for its high-end appliances which is why it's no surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option to connect to your home Wi-Fi and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app lets you monitor and manage your fridge remotely using your tablet or smartphone. The refrigerator is expensive, but it offers top-quality features and functions for the cost.

While the fridge is an incredible piece of equipment, it's important to know the limitations. It has a limited shelf space, which means you'll need to be creative when it comes to storing large items. Additionally the shelves aren't sprillproof and can be easily damaged or stained by sharp objects. The trays can be easily removed from the refrigerator. However, they should be cleaned regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into the frame's compact size. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge has an ordinary French-door design with gallon-sized door bins on each door and two rows of spill-capture shelves, and a set of sleeker drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded down to make space for tall items. There's also a full-width drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

One of the great things about this refrigerator is that the ice maker is in the freezer, making it easy to transfer the ice to the refrigerator to use as required. The freezer features thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers that can help you better organize the placement of your items. It comes with a large bin for storing frozen food and a separate container for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is another cool feature of the refrigerator. You can control the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone. It's a simple method to keep track of your refrigerator and manage it, especially when you're not at home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't improve the performance of the fridge. In fact it took a bit longer to defrost and chill foods in this refrigerator than some of the others we tested. This is likely due to its larger capacity.

The doors are another problem with this fridge. The handles that are sunken allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However taller people have a difficult time closing them without slamming. It would have been much better if they had a front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those looking to blend the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with more efficient design. Its capacity is above average for a counter-depth model and it cools evenly and has a good layout. It's also a little less than the top counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it a great option.

It's a minimalist design that isn't as striking visually as some of the competition, but it has enough features that make it a great pick. Its most important characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer which helps keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser as well as a good ice maker that operates quickly.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you divert part of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, so you can keep food items that need extra attention. This feature can be adjusted using a slider located outside the drawer. You can also adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've noticed that the generic settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the fridge didn't differ much from 38 degrees. That's a good performance, but it doesn't quite make it into the top ten in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat in order to obtain more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of gray-bodied stainless with a "smudge proof" finish. It wards off streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've seen.
